Prayer

The Christian world has always believed in prayer; but in time of sickness, epidemic, in troublefinancial, social, large or small, has it turned in prayer to God, willing to put all reliance there? Prayer should be the "Christian's vital breath." So it was to Daniel, Elijah, Elisha, to Jesus, who said: "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Christian Science has brought to the world again this conception of prayer, its efficacy, its action, its palpitating force. To prove that God has power sufficient to meet every need, is the mission of the redemption Christian Science is bringing to the world.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE HEALING

Healings in the Scriptures
In the Bible we read, "Jesus went about in all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people. And the report of him went forth into all Syria: and they brought unto him all that were sick, holden with divers diseases and torments, possessed with devils, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed them." (Matthew 4: 23, 24, Revised Version)

Commenting on these verses, Judge Septimus J. Hanna, writes: "This is the first biblical account of Jesus’ healing the sick. It is not the first biblical account, however, of the healing of the sick without the aid of drugs or medicine. There are many instances of the healing of disease in the Old Testament without the use of material remedies. ("Healing Through Christian Science," p. 1)

For nearly three hundred years the healing power taught by Jesus was practised and demonstrated by his followers. But that element of Christianity was lost. How was divine healing to be restored? Mary Baker Eddy tells us: "Our Master healed the sick, practised Christian healing, and taught the generalities of its divine Principle to his students; but he left no definite rule for demonstrating this Principle of healing and preventing disease. This rule remained to be discovered in Christian Science." ("Science and Health," p. 147)

Christian Science Became Requisite in the Divine Order
Mrs. Eddy writes, "Rightly to read and to practise the Scriptures, their spiritual sense must be discerned, understood, and demonstrated. God being Spirit, His language and meaning are wholly spiritual. Uninspired knowledge of the translations of the Scriptures has imparted little power to practise the Word. Hence the revelation, discovery, and presentation of Christian Science — the Christ Science, or 'new tongue' of which St. Mark prophesied — became requisite in the divine order." ("The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," p. 238) Healing is an essential element of true Christianity and Christian Science reinstates it.

Other Schools of Religion and Medicine
We have great regard for all the institutions of the world which aid in any degree in the spiritualization and advancement of humanity.
People who desire to do right will accomplish something along this line, however insufficient their methods might be. We do not condemn our grandfathers because they farmed with crude tools and instruments; rather, we honor them because they worked earnestly and cheerfully in spite of the imperfection of their tools. We would not criticize any effort on the part of Christians who have not yet learned the truths explained in Christian Science. However, only the perfect, spiritual method is satisfactory, and the call for higher and better methods leads on, one step at a time, until we finally reach the perfect.

Stages of Advancement
The student just beginning to solve simple problems in addition and subtraction may not be able to solve higher problems, yet through practice and progress he hopes to attain to the skills of his teacher. The follower of Jesus may not at first bring out results equal to his, but by growing in goodness and spirituality, he constantly hopes to improve his proficiency. As we grow in our understanding of spiritual things, our ability to demonstrate spiritual healing increases.

More About this Topic
For a comprehensive explanation of Christian Science healing, we recommend careful study of the Bible and
