together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him,
Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The
first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is
one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy
strength: this is the first commandment.

Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the

(1) 112:16
From the infinite One in Christian Science comes one Principle and
its infinite idea, and with this infinitude come spiritual rules,
laws, and their demonstration, which, like the great Giver, are "the
same yesterday, and to-day, and forever;" for thus are the divine
Principle of healing and the Christ-idea characterized in the epistle
to the Hebrews.
(2) 18:13
The atonement of Christ reconciles man to God, not God to man; for
the divine Principle of Christ is God, and how can God propitiate
Himself? Christ is Truth, which reaches no higher than itself. The
fountain can rise no higher than its source. Christ, Truth, could
conciliate no nature above his own, derived from the eternal Love. It
was therefore Christ's purpose to reconcile man to God, not God to
man. Love and Truth are not at war with God's image and likeness. Man
cannot exceed divine Love, and so atone for himself. Even Christ
cannot reconcile Truth to error, for Truth and error are
irreconcilable. Jesus aided in reconciling man to God by giving man a
truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of Jesus' teachings, and
this truer sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter, sin, and
death by the law of Spirit, the law of divine Love.
(3) 78:28
Spirit blesses man, but man cannot "tell whence it cometh." By it the
sick are healed, the sorrowing are comforted, and the sinning are
reformed. These are the effects of one universal God, the invisible
good dwelling in eternal Science.

(3) Ex 12:21-24, 26, 27
Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them,
Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the
passover. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the
blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side
posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go
out at the door of his house until the morning. For the Lord will
pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon
the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the
door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses
to smite you. And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to
thee and to thy sons for ever. And it shall come to pass, when your
children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye
shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord's passover, who passed
over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the
Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head
and worshipped.
(4) I Cor 5:7, 8
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye
are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with
the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of
sincerity and truth.
(4) 32:28-10
The Passover, which Jesus ate with his disciples in the month Nisan
on the night before his crucifixion, was a mournful occasion, a sad
supper taken at the close of day, in the twilight of a glorious
career with shadows fast falling around; and this supper closed
forever Jesus' ritualism or concessions to matter. His followers,
sorrowful and silent, anticipating the hour of their Master's
betrayal, partook of the heavenly manna, which of old had fed in the
wilderness the persecuted followers of Truth. Their bread indeed came
down from heaven. It was the great truth of spiritual being, healing
the sick and casting out error. Their Master had explained it all
before, and now this bread was feeding and sustaining
them.
(5) 26:10-23
The Christ was the Spirit which Jesus implied in his own statements:
"I am the way, the truth, and the life;" "I and my Father are one."
This Christ, or divinity of the man Jesus, was his divine nature, the
godliness which animated him. Divine Truth, Life, and Love gave Jesus
authority over sin, sickness, and death. His mission was to reveal
the Science of celestial being, to prove what God is and what He does
for man. A musician demonstrates the beauty of the music he teaches
in order to show the learner the way by practice as well as precept.
Jesus' teaching and practice of Truth involved such a sacrifice as
makes us admit its Principle to be Love.
(6) 559:23
When you approach nearer and nearer to this divine Principle, when
you eat the divine body of this Principle, thus partaking of
the nature, or primal elements, of Truth and Love, do not be
surprised nor discontented because you must share the hemlock cup and
eat the bitter herbs; for the Israelites of old at the Paschal meal
thus prefigured this perilous passage out of bondage into the El
Dorado of faith and hope.
Section III
(5) Ex 30:1, 3, 7-10
And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood
shalt thou make it. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top
thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof;
and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about. And Aaron
shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the
lamps, he shall burn incense upon it. And when Aaron lighteth the
lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense
before the Lord throughout your generations. Ye shall offer no
strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering;
neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon. And Aaron shall make an
atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the
sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement
upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto the
Lord.
(6) Rev 8:3
And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden
censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should
offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which
was before the throne.
(7) 21:1
If Truth is overcoming error in your daily walk and conversation, you
can finally say, "I have fought a good fight . . . I have kept the
faith," because you are a better man. This is having our part in the
at-one-ment with Truth and Love. Christians do not continue to labor
and pray, expecting because of another's goodness, suffering, and
triumph, that they shall reach his harmony and reward.
(8) 362:1-7
It is related in the seventh chapter of Luke's Gospel that Jesus was
once the honored guest of a certain Pharisee, by name Simon, though
he was quite unlike Simon the disciple. While they were at meat, an
unusual incident occurred, as if to interrupt the scene of Oriental
festivity. A "strange woman" came in.
(9) 363:1
She bore an alabaster jar containing costly and fragrant oil,
sandal oil perhaps, which is in such common use in the East. Breaking
the sealed jar, she perfumed Jesus' feet with the oil, wiping them
with her long hair, which hung loosely about her shoulders, as was
customary with women of her grade.
(10) 364:3
Her reverence was unfeigned, and it was manifested towards one who
was soon, though they knew it not, to lay down his mortal existence
in behalf of all sinners, that through his word and works they might
be redeemed from sensuality and sin.
(11) 3:4-7, 12
Who would stand before a blackboard, and pray the principle of
mathematics to solve the problem? The rule is already established,
and it is our task to work out the solution. The Divine Being must be
reflected by man, else man is not the image and likeness of
the patient, tender, and true, the One "altogether lovely;" but to
understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute
consecration of thought, energy, and desire.
Section IV
(7) Ex 30:11, 12, 15
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, When thou takest the sum of
the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every
man a ransom for his soul unto the Lord, when thou numberest them;
that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them. The
rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half
a shekel, when they give an offering unto the Lord, to make an
atonement for your souls.
(8) I Pet 1:17-19
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth
according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here
in fear: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation
received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood
of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
(9) Titus 2:11-14
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all
men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we
should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the
great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that
he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a
peculiar people, zealous of good works.
(12) 202:3-13
The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought
out in life-practice, and God's will must be universally done. If men
would bring to bear upon the study of the Science of Mind half the
faith they bestow upon the so-called pains and pleasures of material
sense, they would not go on from bad to worse, until disciplined by
the prison and the scaffold; but the whole human family would be
redeemed through the merits of Christ, through the perception
and acceptance of Truth.
(13) 151:4
Infinite Mind could not possibly create a remedy outside of itself,
but erring, finite, human mind has an absolute need of something
beyond itself for its redemption and healing.
(14) 19:17
Every pang of repentance and suffering, every effort for reform,
every good thought and deed, will help us to understand Jesus'
atonement for sin and aid its efficacy; but if the sinner continues
to pray and repent, sin and be sorry, he has little part in the
atonement, in the at-one-ment with God, for he
lacks the practical repentance, which reforms the heart and enables
man to do the will of wisdom. Those who cannot demonstrate, at least
in part, the divine Principle of the teachings and practice of our
Master have no part in God. If living in disobedience to Him, we
ought to feel no security, although God is good.
(15) 24:11-15
He to whom "the arm of the Lord" is revealed will believe our report,
and rise into newness of life with regeneration. This is having part
in the atonement; this is the understanding, in which Jesus suffered
and triumphed.

(10) Heb 9:2, 3, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15,

For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the
candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the
sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called
the Holiest of all; But into the second went the high priest alone
once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and
for the errors of the people: The Holy Ghost this signifying, that
the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as
the first tabernacle was yet standing: But Christ being come an high
priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect
tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this
building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own
blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new
testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the
transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are
called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For Christ
is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the
figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the
presence of God for us:
(11) Heb 7:19, 22, 26
For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better
hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. By so much was Jesus
made a surety of a better testament. For such an high priest became
us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made
higher than the heavens;
(16) 141:13-21
In healing the sick and sinning, Jesus elaborated the fact that the
healing effect followed the understanding of the divine Principle and
of the Christ-spirit which governed the corporeal Jesus. For this
Principle there is no dynasty, no ecclesiastical monopoly. Its only
crowned head is immortal sovereignty. Its only priest is the
spiritualized man. The Bible declares that all believers are made
"kings and priests unto God."
(17) 315:3-4, 11-16
That saying of our Master, "I and my Father are one," separated him
from the scholastic theology of the rabbis. The opposite and false
views of the people hid from their sense Christ's sonship with God.
They could not discern his spiritual existence. Their carnal minds
were at enmity with it. Their thoughts were filled with mortal error,
instead of with God's spiritual idea as presented by Christ
Jesus.
(18) 361:4-18
Christ, as the true spiritual idea, is the ideal of God now and
forever, here and everywhere. The Jew who believes in the First
Commandment is a monotheist; he has one omnipresent God. Thus the Jew
unites with the Christian's doctrine that God is come and is present
now and forever. The Christian who believes in the First Commandment
is a monotheist. Thus he virtually unites with the Jew's belief in
one God, and recognizes that Jesus Christ is not God, as Jesus
himself declared, but is the Son of God. This declaration of Jesus,
understood, conflicts not at all with another of his sayings: "I and
my Father are one," that is, one in quality, not in quantity.
As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the
sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in
being.
Section VI
(12) Eph 1:3, 9-11
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath
blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his
good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the
dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one
all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on
earth; even in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance,
being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all
things after the counsel of his own will:
(13) I Cor 1:26, 27, 29, 30
For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after
the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath
chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God
hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which
are mighty; That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him
are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and
righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
(14) Rom 5:10, 11
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death
of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his
life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
(19) 240:10-11
In the order of Science, in which the Principle is above what it
reflects, all is one grand concord.
(20) 117:15
Our Master taught spirituality by similitudes and parables. As a
divine student he unfolded God to man, illustrating and demonstrating
Life and Truth in himself and by his power over the sick and sinning.
Human theories are inadequate to interpret the divine Principle
involved in the miracles (marvels) wrought by Jesus and especially in
his mighty, crowning, unparalleled, and triumphant exit from the
flesh.
(21) 45:6-13, 16
Our Master fully and finally demonstrated divine Science in his
victory over death and the grave. Jesus' deed was for the
enlightenment of men and for the salvation of the whole world from
sin, sickness, and death. Paul writes: "For if, when we were enemies,
we were reconciled to God by the [seeming] death of His Son,
much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." Glory be
to God, and peace to the struggling hearts! Christ hath rolled away
the stone from the door of human hope and faith, and through the
revelation and demonstration of life in God, hath elevated them to
possible at-one-ment with the spiritual idea of man and his divine
Principle, Love.
(22) 76:22-29
The sinless joy, the perfect harmony and immortality of Life,
possessing unlimited divine beauty and goodness without a single
bodily pleasure or pain, constitutes the only veritable,
indestructible man, whose being is spiritual. This state of existence
is scientific and intact, a perfection discernible only by
those who have the final understanding of Christ in divine Science.
