Friends:
The Bible and the Christian Science
textbook are our only preachers. We shall
now read Scriptural texts, and their
correlative passages from our
denominational textbook; these comprise
our sermon.
The
canonical writings, together with the word
of our textbook, corroborating and
explaining the Bible texts in their
spiritual import and application to all
ages, past, present, and future,
constitute a sermon undivorced from truth,
uncontaminated and unfettered by human
hypotheses, and divinely
authorized.

Golden
Text: Matthew 21:22 all.
All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in
prayer, believing, ye shall
receive.
Responsive
Reading: Luke 1:67-79.
67 And his father Zacharias was
filled with the Holy Ghost, and
prophesied, saying,
68 Blessed be the Lord God of
Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed
his people,
69 And hath raised up an horn of
salvation for us in the house of his
servant David;
70 As he spake by the mouth of his
holy prophets, which have been since the
world began:
71 That we should be saved from our
enemies, and from the hand of all that
hate us;
72 To perform the mercy promised to
our fathers, and to remember his holy
covenant;
73 The oath which he sware to our
father Abraham,
74 That he would grant unto us,
that we being delivered out of the hand of
our enemies might serve him without
fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness
before him, all the days of our life.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called
the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt
go before the face of the Lord to prepare
his ways;
77 To give knowledge of salvation
unto his people by the remission of their
sins,
78 Through the tender mercy of our
God; whereby the dayspring from on high
hath visited us,
79 To give light to them that sit
in darkness and in the shadow of death, to
guide our feet into the way of
peace.

This lesson
was prepared by early students of Christian Science to
reinforce the class teaching given by Mary Baker Eddy in the
Massachusetts Metaphysical College in the 1880s and 1890s.
Consistent with the outline used in her teaching, the six
sections of the early lessons usually followed a general
outline:
Section
One: The relation of the subject to
God.
Section
Two: The relation of the subject to man or Christ Jesus.
Section Three: The presentation of Christian Science
through a relative law, as related to the
subject.
Section
Four: The application of the relative law presented in
section three. Section Five: The demonstration of the
relative law from section three. Section Six: The
triumph or victory of the relative law, leaving the student
in the kingdom of God. For more information, visit our

The Holy Bible
King
James Version
(1)
Isa 60:1, 2, 18, 22
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and
the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
For, behold, the darkness shall cover the
earth, and gross darkness the people: but
the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his
glory shall be seen upon thee. Violence
shall no more be heard in thy land,
wasting nor destruction within thy
borders; but thou shalt call thy walls
Salvation, and thy gates Praise. A little
one shall become a thousand, and a small
one a strong nation: I the Lord will
hasten it in his time.
(2) Eph
5:8, 11, 13, 14
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now
are ye light in the Lord: walk as children
of light: And have no fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness, but rather
reprove them. But all things that are
reproved are made manifest by the light:
for whatsoever doth make manifest is
light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that
sleepest, and arise from the dead, and
Christ shall give thee light.

Science
and Health
with Key to the Scriptures
by
Mary Baker Eddy
(1)
95:23-32
Led by a solitary star amid the darkness,
the Magi of old foretold the Messiahship
of Truth. Is the wise man of to-day
believed, when he beholds the light which
heralds Christ's eternal dawn and
describes its effulgence? Lulled by
stupefying illusions, the world is asleep
in the cradle of infancy, dreaming away
the hours. Material sense does not unfold
the facts of existence; but spiritual
sense lifts human consciousness into
eternal Truth.
(2)
93:21-22
The belief that Spirit is finite as well
as infinite has darkened all
history.
(3)
191:8
As a material, theoretical life-basis is
found to be a misapprehension of
existence, the spiritual and divine
Principle of man dawns upon human thought,
and leads it to "where the young child
was," even to the birth of a
new-old idea, to the spiritual sense of
being and of what Life includes. Thus the
whole earth will be transformed by Truth
on its pinions of light, chasing away the
darkness of error.
(4)
vii:1
To those leaning on the sustaining
infinite, to-day is big with blessings.
The wakeful shepherd beholds the first
faint morning beams, ere cometh the full
radiance of a risen day. So shone the pale
star to the prophet-shepherds; yet it
traversed the night, and came where, in
cradled obscurity, lay the Bethlehem babe,
the human herald of Christ, Truth, who
would make plain to benighted
understanding the way of salvation through
Christ Jesus, till across a night of error
should dawn the morning beams and shine
the guiding star of being. The Wisemen
were led to behold and to follow this
daystar of divine Science, lighting the
way to eternal harmony.

Ps 67:1, 2, 6
God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and
cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.
That thy way may be known upon earth, thy
saving health among all nations. Then
shall the earth yield her increase; and
God, even our own God, shall bless
us.

Matt 21:12-16
And Jesus went into the temple of God, and
cast out all them that sold and bought in
the temple, and overthrew the tables of
the moneychangers, and the seats of them
that sold doves, And said unto them, It is
written, My house shall be called the
house of prayer; but ye have made it a den
of thieves. And the blind and the lame
came to him in the temple; and he healed
them. And when the chief priests and
scribes saw the wonderful things that he
did, and the children crying in the
temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of
David; they were sore displeased, And said
unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And
Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never
read, Out of the mouth of babes and
sucklings thou hast perfected
praise?

(5) 1:1
The prayer that reforms the sinner and
heals the sick is an absolute faith that
all things are possible to God, a
spiritual understanding of Him, an
unselfed love. Regardless of what another
may say or think on this subject, I speak
from experience. Prayer, watching, and
working, combined with self-immolation,
are God's gracious means for accomplishing
whatever has been successfully done for
the Christianization and health of
mankind.
(6)
173:26
Human reason and religion come slowly to
the recognition of spiritual facts, and so
continue to call upon matter to remove the
error which the human mind alone has
created.
(7)
12:1
"The prayer of faith shall save the sick,"
says the Scripture. What is this healing
prayer? A mere request that God will heal
the sick has no power to gain more of the
divine presence than is always at hand.
The beneficial effect of such prayer for
the sick is on the human mind, making it
act more powerfully on the body through a
blind faith in God. This, however, is one
belief casting out another, a
belief in the unknown casting out a belief
in sickness. It is neither Science nor
Truth which acts through blind belief, nor
is it the human understanding of the
divine healing Principle as manifested in
Jesus, whose humble prayers were deep and
conscientious protests of Truth, of
man's likeness to God and of man's unity
with Truth and Love.

Isa 42:1, 4
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine
elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have
put my spirit upon him: he shall bring
forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall
not fail nor be discouraged, till he have
set judgment in the earth: and the isles
shall wait for his law.
(6)
Matt 21:23-27
And when he was come into the temple, the
chief priests and the elders of the people
came unto him as he was teaching, and
said, By what authority doest thou these
things? and who gave thee this authority?
And Jesus answered and said unto them, I
also will ask you one thing, which if ye
tell me, I in like wise will tell you by
what authority I do these things. The
baptism of John, whence was it? from
heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with
themselves, saying, If we shall say, From
heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye
not then believe him? But if we shall say,
Of men; we fear the people; for all hold
John as a prophet. And they answered
Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he
said unto them, Neither tell I you by what
authority I do these things.

|
(8)
26:14
Divine Truth, Life, and Love gave Jesus
authority over sin, sickness, and death.
His mission was to reveal the Science of
celestial being, to prove what God is and
what He does for man.
(9)
342:18-3
Shall it be denied that a system which
works according to the Scriptures has
Scriptural authority? Christian Science
awakens the sinner, reclaims the infidel,
and raises from the couch of pain the
helpless invalid. It speaks to the dumb
the words of Truth, and they answer with
rejoicing. It causes the deaf to hear, the
lame to walk, and the blind to see. Who
would be the first to disown the
Christliness of good works, when our
Master says, "By their fruits ye shall
know them"? If Christian Scientists were
teaching or practising pharmacy or
obstetrics according to the common
theories, no denunciations would follow
them, even if their treatment resulted in
the death of a patient. The people are
taught in such cases to say, Amen. Shall I
then be smitten for healing and for
teaching Truth as the Principle of
healing, and for proving my word by my
deed?
(10)
381:20
Think less of the enactments of mortal
mind, and you will sooner grasp man's
God-given dominion. You must understand
your way out of human theories relating to
health, or you will never believe that you
are quite free from some ailment. The
harmony and immortality of man will never
be reached without the understanding that
Mind is not in matter. Let us banish
sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the
rule of perpetual harmony, God's
law. It is man's moral right to annul an
unjust sentence, a sentence never
inflicted by divine authority.
(11)
270:22
The pride of priesthood is the prince of
this world. It has nothing in Christ.
Meekness and charity have divine
authority. Mortals think wickedly;
consequently they are wicked. They think
sickly thoughts, and so become sick. If
sin makes sinners, Truth and Love alone
can unmake them. If a sense of disease
produces suffering and a sense of ease
antidotes suffering, disease is mental,
not material. Hence the fact that the
human mind alone suffers, is sick, and
that the divine Mind alone
heals.

(7) John 14:12
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that
believeth on me, the works that I do shall
he do also; and greater works than these
shall he do; because I go unto my
Father.
(8)
Acts 5:12 (to 1st ;), 14, 16
And by the hands of the apostles were many
signs and wonders wrought among the
people; And believers were the more added
to the Lord, multitudes both of men and
women.) There came also a multitude out of
the cities round about unto Jerusalem,
bringing sick folks, and them which were
vexed with unclean spirits: and they were
healed every one.
(9)
Acts 9:32-35
And it came to pass, as Peter passed
throughout all quarters, he came down also
to the saints which dwelt at Lydda. And
there he found a certain man named Aeneas,
which had kept his bed eight years, and
was sick of the palsy. And Peter said unto
him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee
whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he
arose immediately. And all that dwelt at
Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the
Lord.

(12)
52:23
The highest earthly representative of God,
speaking of human ability to reflect
divine power, prophetically said to his
disciples, speaking not for their day only
but for all time: "He that believeth on
me, the works that I do shall he do also;"
and "These signs shall follow them that
believe."
(13)
328:28-13
Jesus' promise is perpetual. Had it been
given only to his immediate disciples, the
Scriptural passage would read you,
not they. The purpose of his great
life-work extends through time and
includes universal humanity. Its Principle
is infinite, reaching beyond the pale of a
single period or of a limited following.
As time moves on, the healing elements of
pure Christianity will be fairly dealt
with; they will be sought and taught, and
will glow in all the grandeur of universal
goodness. A little leaven leavens the
whole lump. A little understanding of
Christian Science proves the truth of all
that I say of it. Because you cannot walk
on the water and raise the dead, you have
no right to question the great might of
divine Science in these directions. Be
thankful that Jesus, who was the true
demonstrator of Science, did these things,
and left his example for us. In Science we
can use only what we understand. We must
prove our faith by
demonstration.
(14)
41:22
Jesus foresaw the reception Christian
Science would have before it was
understood, but this foreknowledge
hindered him not. He fulfilled his
God-mission, and then sat down at the
right hand of the Father. Persecuted from
city to city, his apostles still went
about doing good deeds, for which they
were maligned and stoned. The truth taught
by Jesus, the elders scoffed at. Why?
Because it demanded more than they were
willing to practise. It was enough for
them to believe in a national Deity; but
that belief, from their time to ours, has
never made a disciple who could cast out
evils and heal the sick.

Mal 3:1
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he
shall prepare the way before me: and the
Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to
his temple, even the messenger of the
covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he
shall come, saith the Lord of
hosts.
(11)
Mal 4:2 (to 1st ;)
But unto you that fear my name shall the
Sun of righteousness arise with healing in
his wings;
(12)
Rev 12:1-3, 5, 9, 10
And there appeared a great wonder in
heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and
the moon under her feet, and upon her head
a crown of twelve stars: And she being
with child cried, travailing in birth, and
pained to be delivered. And there appeared
another wonder in heaven; and behold a
great red dragon, having seven heads and
ten horns, and seven crowns upon his
heads. And she brought forth a man child,
who was to rule all nations with a rod of
iron: and her child was caught up unto
God, and to his throne. And the great
dragon was cast out, that old serpent,
called the Devil, and Satan, which
deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out
into the earth, and his angels were cast
out with him. And I heard a loud voice
saying in heaven, Now is come salvation,
and strength, and the kingdom of our God,
and the power of his Christ: for the
accuser of our brethren is cast down,
which accused them before our God day and
night.

559:32
The twelfth chapter of the Apocalypse, or
Revelation of St. John, has a special
suggestiveness in connection with the
nineteenth century. In the opening of the
sixth seal, typical of six thousand years
since Adam, the distinctive feature has
reference to the present age.
(16)
561:8-13, 20-29
The Revelator beheld the spiritual idea
from the mount of vision. Purity was the
symbol of Life and Love. The Revelator saw
also the spiritual ideal as a woman
clothed in light, a bride coming down from
heaven, wedded to the Lamb of Love. In
divine revelation, material and corporeal
selfhood disappear, and the spiritual idea
is understood. The woman in the Apocalypse
symbolizes generic man, the spiritual idea
of God; she illustrates the coincidence of
God and man as the divine Principle and
divine idea. The Revelator symbolizes
Spirit by the sun. The spiritual idea is
clad with the radiance of spiritual Truth,
and matter is put under her feet. The
light portrayed is really neither solar
nor lunar, but spiritual Life, which is
"the light of men."
(17)
107:1
In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ
Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and
Love, and named my discovery Christian
Science. God had been graciously preparing
me during many years for the reception of
this final revelation of the absolute
divine Principle of scientific mental
healing.
(18)
109:22
The revelation of Truth in the
understanding came to me gradually and
apparently through divine power. When a
new spiritual idea is borne to earth, the
prophetic Scripture of Isaiah is renewedly
fulfilled: "Unto us a child is born, . . .
and his name shall be called
Wonderful."

Matt 21:42, 43
Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read
in the scriptures, The stone which the
builders rejected, the same is become the
head of the corner: this is the Lord's
doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of
God shall be taken from you, and given to
a nation bringing forth the fruits
thereof.
(14)
John 15:4, 7, 8, 24, 26, 27
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch
cannot bear fruit of itself, except it
abide in the vine; no more can ye, except
ye abide in me. If ye abide in me, and my
words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye
will, and it shall be done unto you.
Herein is my Father glorified, that ye
bear much fruit; so shall ye be my
disciples. If I had not done among them
the works which none other man did, they
had not had sin: but now have they both
seen and hated both me and my Father. But
when the Comforter is come, whom I will
send unto you from the Father, even the
Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the
Father, he shall testify of me: And ye
also shall bear witness, because ye have
been with me from the
beginning.

|
(19) 127:26
Science is an emanation of divine Mind,
and is alone able to interpret God aright.
It has a spiritual, and not a material
origin. It is a divine utterance,
the Comforter which leadeth into all
truth.
(20)
126:8, 22
All Science is divine. Human thought never
projected the least portion of true being.
Human belief has sought and interpreted in
its own way the echo of Spirit, and so
seems to have reversed it and repeated it
materially; but the human mind never
produced a real tone nor sent forth a
positive sound. I have set forth Christian
Science and its application to the
treatment of disease just as I have
discovered them. I have demonstrated
through Mind the effects of Truth on the
health, longevity, and morals of men; and
I have found nothing in ancient or in
modern systems on which to found my own,
except the teachings and demonstrations of
our great Master and the lives of prophets
and apostles. The Bible has been my only
authority. I have had no other guide in
"the straight and narrow way" of
Truth.
(21)
496:9 We
We all must learn that Life is God. Ask
yourself: Am I living the life that
approaches the supreme good? Am I
demonstrating the healing power of Truth
and Love? If so, then the way will grow
brighter "unto the perfect day." Your
fruits will prove what the understanding
of God brings to man. Hold perpetually
this thought, that it is the
spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ,
which enables you to demonstrate, with
scientific certainty, the rule of healing,
based upon its divine Principle, Love,
underlying, overlying, and encompassing
all true being.
