The Bible and the Christian Science
textbook are our only preachers. We shall
now read Scriptural texts, and their
correlative passages from our
denominational textbook; these comprise
our sermon.
The
canonical writings, together with the word
of our textbook, corroborating and
explaining the Bible texts in their
spiritual import and application to all
ages, past, present, and future,
constitute a sermon undivorced from truth,
uncontaminated and unfettered by human
hypotheses, and divinely
authorized.

looketh into the perfect law of liberty,
and continueth therein, he being not a
forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work,
this man shall be blessed in his

was prepared by early students of Christian Science to
reinforce the class teaching given by Mary Baker Eddy in the
Massachusetts Metaphysical College in the 1880s and 1890s.
Consistent with the outline used in her teaching, the six
sections of the early lessons usually followed a general
outline:
Section
One: The relation of the subject to
God.
Section
Two: The relation of the subject to man or Christ Jesus.
Section Three: The presentation of Christian Science
through a relative law, as related to the
subject.
Section
Four: The application of the relative law presented in
section three. Section Five: The demonstration of the
relative law from section three. Section Six: The
triumph or victory of the relative law, leaving the student

and Health

13:25-29
Because of human ignorance of the divine
Principle, Love, the Father of all is
represented as a corporeal creator; hence
men recognize themselves as merely
physical, and are ignorant of man as God's
image or reflection and of man's eternal
incorporeal existence.

258:9-30
Man is more than a material form with a
mind inside, which must escape from its
environments in order to be immortal. Man
reflects infinity, and this reflection is
the true idea of God. God expresses in man
the infinite idea forever developing
itself, broadening and rising higher and
higher from a boundless basis. Mind
manifests all that exists in the
infinitude of Truth. We know no more of
man as the true divine image and likeness,
than we know of God. The infinite
Principle is reflected by the infinite
idea and spiritual individuality, but the
material so-called senses have no
cognizance of either Principle or its
idea. The human capacities are enlarged
and perfected in proportion as humanity
gains the true conception of man and God.
Mortals have a very imperfect sense of the
spiritual man and of the infinite range of
his thought. To him belongs eternal Life.
Never born and never dying, it were
impossible for man, under the government
of God in eternal Science, to fall from
his high estate.

The Science of Mind needs to be
understood. Until it is understood,
mortals are more or less deprived of
Truth. Human theories are helpless to make
man harmonious or immortal, since he is so
already, according to Christian Science.
Our only need is to know this and reduce
to practice the real man's divine
Principle, Love.

Genesis i. 27. So God created man
in His own image, in the image of God
created He him; male and female created He
them.
To emphasize this momentous thought, it is
repeated that God made man in His own
image, to reflect the divine Spirit. It
follows that man is a generic
term.

Through spiritual sense you can discern
the heart of divinity, and thus begin to
comprehend in Science the generic term
man.

The offspring of God start not from matter
or ephemeral dust. They are in and of
Spirit, divine Mind, and so forever
continue. God is one. The allness of Deity
is His oneness. Generically man is one,
and specifically man means all
men.

Man is spiritual and perfect; and because
he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so
understood in Christian Science. Man is
idea, the image, of Love; he is not
physique. He is the compound idea of God,
including all right ideas; the generic
term for all that reflects God's image and

as found in Science, in which man is the
reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore
is eternal; that which has no separate
mind from God; that which has not a single
quality underived from Deity; that which

But they that will be rich fall into
temptation and a snare, and into many

love, patience, meekness.

The spiritual man's consciousness and
individuality are reflections of God. They
are the emanations of Him who is Life,
Truth, and Love. Immortal man is not and
never was material, but always spiritual
and eternal. God is individual and
personal in a scientific sense, but not in
any anthropomorphic sense. Therefore man,
reflecting God, cannot lose his
individuality; but as material sensation,
or a soul in the body, blind mortals do
lose sight of spiritual individuality.
Material personality is not realism; it is
not the reflection or likeness of Spirit,
the perfect God.

Absorbed in material selfhood we discern
and reflect but faintly the substance of
Life or Mind. The denial of material
selfhood aids the discernment of man's
spiritual and eternal individuality, and
destroys the erroneous knowledge gained
from matter or through what are termed the
material senses.

This scientific sense of being, forsaking
matter for Spirit, by no means suggests
man's absorption into Deity and the loss
of his identity, but confers upon man
enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of
thought and action, a more expansive love,
a higher and more permanent peace. The
pains of sense are salutary, if they
wrench away false pleasurable beliefs and
transplant the affections from sense to
Soul, where the creations of God are good,
"rejoicing the heart." Such is the sword
of Science, with which Truth decapitates
error, materiality giving place to man's
higher individuality and
destiny.

the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar
descended, and stood at the door of the
tabernacle, and the Lord talked with

proclaim the name of the Lord before thee;
and will be gracious to whom I will be
gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I
will shew mercy. And he said, Thou canst
not see my face: for there shall no man
see me, and live.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any
man will come after me, let him deny
himself, and take up his cross, and follow
me. For whosoever will save his life shall

What, then, is the material personality
which suffers, sins, and dies? It is not
man, the image and likeness of God, but
man's counterfeit, the inverted likeness,
the unlikeness called sin,
sickness, and death.

If we were to derive all our conceptions
of man from what is seen between the
cradle and the grave, happiness and
goodness would have no abiding-place in
man, and the worms would rob him of the
flesh; but Paul writes: "The law of the
Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made
me free from the law of sin and death."
Man undergoing birth, maturity, and decay
is like the beasts and vegetables,
subject to laws of decay. If man were dust
in his earliest stage of existence, we
might admit the hypothesis that he returns
eventually to his primitive condition; but
man was never more nor less than man. Man
in Science is neither young nor old. He
has neither birth nor death. He is not a
beast, a vegetable, nor a migratory mind.
He does not pass from matter to Mind, from
the mortal to the immortal, from evil to
good, or from good to evil.

The history of error is a dream-narrative.
The dream has no reality, no intelligence,
no mind; therefore the dreamer and dream
are one, for neither is true nor
real.

A false belief is both the tempter and the
tempted, the sin and the sinner, the
disease and its cause.

491:22-25, 28
The dream or belief goes on, whether our
eyes are closed or open. In sleep, memory
and consciousness are lost from the body,
and they wander whither they will
apparently with their own separate
embodiment. When we are awake, we dream of
the pains and pleasures of matter. Who
will say, even though he does not
understand Christian Science, that this
dream rather than the dreamer
may not be mortal man? Who can
rationally say otherwise, when the dream
leaves mortal man intact in body and
thought, although the so-called dreamer is
unconscious? For right reasoning there
should be but one fact before the thought,
namely, spiritual existence. In reality
there is no other existence, since Life
cannot be united to its unlikeness,
mortality.

the chief seats in the synagogues, And
greetings in the markets, and to be called
of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called
Rabbi: for one is your Master, even
Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call

The divine nature was best expressed in
Christ Jesus, who threw upon mortals the
truer reflection of God and lifted their
lives higher than their poor
thought-models would allow,
thoughts which presented man as fallen,
sick, sinning, and dying.

Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh.
He said: "Call no man your father upon the
earth: for one is your Father, which is in
heaven." Again he asked: "Who is my
mother, and who are my brethren," implying
that it is they who do the will of his
Father. We have no record of his calling
any man by the name of father. He
recognized Spirit, God, as the only
creator, and therefore as the Father of
all.

When the divine precepts are understood,
they unfold the foundation of fellowship,
in which one mind is not at war with
another, but all have one Spirit, God, one
intelligent source, in accordance with the
Scriptural command: "Let this Mind be in
you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Man
and his Maker are correlated in divine
Science, and real consciousness is
cognizant only of the things of
God.

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers
and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts,

the day of visitation. For so is the will
of God, that with well-doing ye may put to
silence the ignorance of foolish men: As

God gives the lesser idea of Himself for a
link to the greater, and in return, the
higher always protects the lower. The rich
in spirit help the poor in one grand

Principle, or Father; and blessed is that
man who seeth his brother's need and
supplieth it, seeking his own in another's
good. Love giveth to the least spiritual
idea might, immortality, and goodness,
which shine through all as the blossom
shines through the bud. All the varied
expressions of God reflect health,
holiness, immortality infinite
Life, Truth, and Love.

Thus the ideas of God in universal being
are complete and forever expressed, for
Science reveals infinity and the
fatherhood and motherhood of Love. Human
capacity is slow to discern and to grasp
God's creation and the divine power and
presence which go with it, demonstrating
its spiritual origin. Mortals can never
know the infinite, until they throw off
the old man and reach the spiritual image
and likeness. What can fathom infinity!
How shall we declare Him, till, in the
language of the apostle, "we all come in
the unity of the faith, and of the
knowledge of the Son of God, unto a
perfect man, unto the measure of the
stature of the fulness of
Christ"?
