Upon these basic assertions, a consistent and complete scientific and religious system has been founded, which its Discoverer, Mrs. Eddy, has named "Christian Science." This Science is briefly stated in the following from her work, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," page 468: "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness; hence, man is spiritual and not material."
The above quotation is abstract, but it includes the whole of Christian Science. It needs, however, the fuller explanations which are given in the above-named textbook of Christian Science.
It is said by some that Christian Science is ridiculous because its teaching is contrary to the testimony of the five personal senses, but we should remember that the fundamental lesson of Christianity, the declaration of our Lord, that "God is Spirit," and his teaching that God is omnipotent is as radically opposed to the testimony of the five personal senses as any found in Christian Science teaching. The physical senses exclaim, "I do not believe God is Spirit, and 'with us,' for I do not see any Spirit!" Yet Christians universally accept this saying of our Master as true, and thus repudiate the testimony of the physical senses. We insist that he who indorses the teaching of Jesus, "God is Spirit," and adheres to it, must admit every claim of Christian Science; for the whole of its teaching is a consistent deduction from said text. If God is Spirit, it follows of necessity that His creation or likeness is spiritual. If it is spiritual it is not material. . . .
It should be noted here that Christian Science does not deny the true existence of any created thing, but teaches that each is real from the least to the greatest. It denies only the erroneous concept of the thing. The proposition that man has no body, and that everything is nothing, is as unsatisfactory to a Christian Scientist as to any one else, and it does not rightly state the teaching of Christian Science.
Christian Science confines the term reality to the eternal things of God, and applies the word unreality to that which seems to exist, but is not of God. It adheres strictly to the Scriptural teaching: "And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good." Evil, not being good and hence not of God, is declared to be a nonentity. Evil is the absence of good, and sickness is the absence of health, even as darkness is the absence of light. It should be noted that in all scientific inquiry the most important question is not what seems, but what is.
Scientists believe that in our present unspiritual condition our concept of things is erroneous; but that our perception will improve as we advance spiritually, until we shall finally awake in the likeness of God. Then shall we see as He sees heaven and earth in all their beauty, perfection, and spirituality, and the false human view will have passed away forever. Scientists believe that the end of the world is not the end of God's creation, but the end of erroneous concept and abuse thereof, as indicated in John's statement, "I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away." When the erroneous view (the first heaven and earth) shall have passed away, the true heaven and earth will be seen. When we see these as they are, the false perception will have passed away.
Christian Science teaches that by pure and holy living we are to hasten the end of the world, not the end of God's creation, but the end of error, darkness, evil. All that is opposed to God, all that obscures the true concept of His creation, will be consumed by the "fervent heat" of divine Truth. When we learn to see God and creation as they are, we shall no longer see them as they are not; even as when the light appears the darkness disappears. . . .
