Introduction to a Lecture
JOHN ELLIS SEDMAN

On the first page of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy has written, "The time for thinkers has come." All of us here tonight are students; and we are all working and striving to become thinkers, — true, clear, accurate, intelligent thinkers. At each stage in the world's history up to the present time, the human race might well have said of itself, We are a race of false believers; we are a race of dreamers. But a better day has been foretold, and that day is dawning. A prophet has said: "They shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me from the least of them unto the greatest of them saith the Lord." When all men understand God who is Truth then the race may say of itself, Now we are a race of thinkers.

Sincerity, mental elasticity, humility, and teachableness are characteristics of the true thinker; consequently the adult who has grown proud of his opinions must regain childlikeness, before he can become a thinker or understand Truth. Jesus said, "Except ye be converted, and become as little children ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven;" and he also said, "If ye continue in my word, . . . ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Today the truth which Jesus taught and practiced, is again revealed through Christian Science, and it is stirring the hearts and minds of men. Those who see even dimly what is taking place recognize that nothing can endure in these latter days except what is demonstrably good and true.
