            True sympathy is not expressed
                  By trembling at another's fear,
            By entering his cloud of grief,
                  Holding as real the anguished tear.

            Such a mistaken sense doth plunge
                  A brother deeper into woe;
            True sympathy is that which lifts,
                  Inspires, and heals, and comforts so.

            He who is taught by Love divine
                  True sympathy to understand,
            Knows how to meet a brother's need,
                  And lend to him a helping hand,

            Saying, Have courage, brother, rise,
                  Lift up your eyes, and you shall see
            Truth's radiance shining through the clouds;
                  Aye, this is Christly sympathy.
