Christian Science Testimony FREED FROM SMOKING          My wife became interested in Christian Science through some friends; and from the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy she received great relief from physical ailments. Up to this time I had been quite antagonistic to what I thought Christian Science to be. One night, after going to bed, I reached out for Science and Health, which was on the bedroom table. When I took it to read, I knew it would please my wife; and besides this, there was a hope that I should find something that would appear funny to me, and might be used to tease a friend with whom I was associated in business and who was a Christian Scientist. I had not read very many lines, however, before everything but the book was forgotten; and I kept on reading it night after night.  The second or third night, I found I was reading it without my glasses, which I had used for a number of years, and also without headache or tired eyes.  It surely had both healed and opened my eyes; and things were seen in a different light.  A few days later arch supporters, which I had worn for many years, became unnecessary. Things like these happened one after the other, and I became very much interested in Christian Science.          Then one day I saw in Science and Health what Mrs. Eddy says about the use of tobacco.  I had smoked for twenty-one years, and did not see how I could get along without tobacco. Nevertheless, I kept on studying, and every little while the tobacco question would come up. It would not down, although I smoked even more than I had ever done before. Still, I liked Christian Science, and attended the services regularly, enjoying every minute of them. One day after dinner I sat down to enjoy the reading of a Christian Science lecture, jammed my pipe full of tobacco, lighted it, and was all fixed for a real good time. That lecture put my pipe out forever; for the picture I saw of myself sitting there, with a pipe stuck in my mouth, matches lying around, ashes on my clothes and the floor, made me feel so cheap that I sneaked past my wife, who was in the same room, and down to the cellar, where I threw the pipe into the furnace. Some time afterwards I asked the question of myself, How was I healed of the tobacco habit? While I was perfectly satisfied with the results of the healing, I wanted to know how it came about. I knew that in order to be good, I must have a desire for good. Yes, that was it! I did want to be good and to make progress in Science; and so this big stumblingblock in the way of progress was taken away from me, and taken away ever so gently.          In addition to the above related healings, I have had many other proofs of God's care of His children; and I can now understand what Jesus meant when he told Nicodemus that he must be born again.          I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for giving us Science and Health.
