Text: Isaiah 25:9. This is the
Lord; we have waited for him, we will be
glad and rejoice in his salvation.
24 O Lord, how manifold are thy
works! in wisdom hast thou made them all:
the earth is full of thy riches.
25 So is this great and wide sea,
wherein are things creeping innumerable,
both small and great beasts.
26 There go the ships: there is
that leviathan, whom thou hast made to
play therein.
27 These wait all upon thee; that
thou mayest give them their meat in due
season.
28 That thou givest them they
gather: thou openest thine hand, they are
filled with good.
29 Thou hidest thy face, they are
troubled: thou takest away their breath,
they die, and return to their dust.
30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit,
they are created: and thou renewest the
face of the earth.
33 I will sing unto the Lord as
long as I live: I will sing praise to my
God while I have my being.
34 My meditation of him shall be
sweet: I will be glad in the Lord.
35 Let the sinners be consumed out
of the earth, and let the wicked be no
more. Bless thou the Lord, O my soul.
Praise ye the Lord.
Study Guide This lesson
was prepared by early students of Christian Science to
reinforce the class teaching given by Mary Baker Eddy in the
Massachusetts Metaphysical College in the 1880s and 1890s.
Consistent with the outline used in her teaching, the six
sections of the early lessons usually followed a general
outline: Section
One: The relation of the subject to
God.
Section
Two: The relation of the subject to man or Christ Jesus.
Section Three: The presentation of Christian Science
through a relative law, as related to the
subject.
Section
Four: The application of the relative law presented in
section three. Section Five: The demonstration of the
relative law from section three. Section Six: The
triumph or victory of the relative law, leaving the student
in the kingdom of God. For more information, visit our

(1) Ps
57:9-11
I will praise thee, O Lord, among the
people: I will sing unto thee among the
nations. For thy mercy is great unto the
heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds. Be
thou exalted, O God, above the heavens:
let thy glory be above all the earth.
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for
praise is comely for the upright. For the
word of the Lord is right; and all his
works are done in truth. He loveth
righteousness and judgment: the earth is
full of the goodness of the Lord. Blessed
is the nation whose God is the Lord; and
the people whom he hath chosen for his own
inheritance. The Lord looketh from heaven;
he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the
place of his habitation he looketh upon
all the inhabitants of the earth. He
fashioneth their hearts alike; he
considereth all their works.
For the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is
the governor among the nations.

71:7
Soul is synonymous with Spirit, God, the
creative, governing, infinite Principle
outside of finite form, which forms only
reflect.
Thought will finally be understood and
seen in all form, substance, and color,
but without material accompaniments. The
potter is not in the clay; else the clay
would have power over the potter. God is
His own infinite Mind, and expresses all.
Day may decline and shadows fall, but
darkness flees when the earth has again
turned upon its axis. The sun is not
affected by the revolution of the earth.
So Science reveals Soul as God, untouched
by sin and death, as the
central Life and intelligence around which
circle harmoniously all things in the
systems of Mind.
If man's spiritual gravitation and
attraction to one Father, in whom we
"live, and move, and have our being,"
should be lost, and if man should be
governed by corporeality instead of divine
Principle, by body instead of by Soul, man
would be annihilated.
The Science of being reveals man as
perfect, even as the Father is perfect,
because the Soul, or Mind, of the
spiritual man is God, the divine Principle
of all being, and because this real man is
governed by Soul instead of sense, by the
law of Spirit, not by the so-called laws
of matter.

Ps 25:8-11
Good and upright is the Lord: therefore
will he teach sinners in the way. The meek
will he guide in judgment: and the meek
will he teach his way. All the paths of
the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as
keep his covenant and his testimonies. For
thy name's sake, O Lord, pardon mine
iniquity; for it is great.
Blessed is he whose transgression is
forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is
the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not
iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no
guile. Many sorrows shall be to the
wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord,
mercy shall compass him about.
He looketh upon men, and if any say, I
have sinned, and perverted that which was
right, and it profited me not; He will
deliver his soul from going into the pit,
and his life shall see the light. Lo, all
these things worketh God oftentimes with
man, To bring back his soul from the pit,
to be enlightened with the light of the
living.
(5) 481:28
Soul is the divine Principle of man and
never sins, hence the
immortality of Soul. In Science we learn
that it is material sense, not Soul, which
sins; and it will be found that it is the
sense of sin which is lost, and not a
sinful soul. When reading the Scriptures,
the substitution of the word sense
for soul gives the exact meaning in
a majority of cases.
If Soul sinned, it would be mortal, for
sin is mortality's self, because it kills
itself. If Truth is immortal, error must
be mortal, because error is unlike Truth.
Because Soul is immortal, Soul cannot sin,
for sin is not the eternal verity of
being.
We cannot deny that Life is
self-sustained, and we should never deny
the everlasting harmony of Soul, simply
because, to the mortal senses, there is
seeming discord. It is our ignorance of
God, the divine Principle, which produces
apparent discord, and the right
understanding of Him restores harmony.
Truth will at length compel us all to
exchange the pleasures and pains of sense
for the joys of Soul. Suffer no claim of
sin or of sickness to grow upon the
thought. Dismiss it with an abiding
conviction that it is illegitimate,
because you know that God is no more the
author of sickness than He is of sin. You
have no law of His to support the
necessity either of sin or sickness, but
you have divine authority for denying that
necessity and healing the sick.

Lam 3:24-26
The Lord is my portion, saith my soul;
therefore will I hope in him. The Lord is
good unto them that wait for him, to the
soul that seeketh him. It is good that a
man should both hope and quietly wait for
the salvation of the Lord.
Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for
thou art my servant: I have formed thee;
thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt
not be forgotten of me. I have blotted
out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions,
and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me;
for I have redeemed thee. Sing, O ye
heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout,
ye lower parts of the earth: break forth
into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and
every tree therein: for the Lord hath
redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in
Israel.
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine
elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have
put my spirit upon him: he shall bring
forth judgment to the Gentiles.

477:6,26
Man is not a material habitation for Soul;
he is himself spiritual. Soul, being
Spirit, is seen in nothing imperfect nor
material. Man is the expression of Soul.
The Indians caught some glimpses of the
underlying reality, when they called a
certain beautiful lake "the smile of the
Great Spirit." Separated from man, who
expresses Soul, Spirit would be a
nonentity; man, divorced from Spirit,
would lose his entity. But there is, there
can be, no such division, for man is
coexistent with God.
Human will is an animal propensity, not a
faculty of Soul. Hence it cannot govern
man aright. Christian Science reveals
Truth and Love as the motive-powers of
man. Will blind, stubborn,
and headlong cooperates with
appetite and passion. From this
cooperation arises its evil. From this
also comes its powerlessness, since all
power belongs to God, good.
If it were possible for the real senses of
man to be injured, Soul could reproduce
them in all their perfection; but they
cannot be disturbed nor destroyed, since
they exist in immortal Mind, not in
matter.
All we correctly know of Spirit comes from
God, divine Principle, and is learned
through Christ and Christian Science. If
this Science has been thoroughly learned
and properly digested, we can know the
truth more accurately than the astronomer
can read the stars or calculate an
eclipse. This Mind-reading is the opposite
of clairvoyance. It is the illumination of
the spiritual understanding which
demonstrates the capacity of Soul, not of
material sense. This Soul-sense comes to
the human mind when the latter yields to
the divine Mind. Such intuitions reveal
whatever constitutes and perpetuates
harmony, enabling one to do good, but not
evil.

And Solomon stood before the altar of the
Lord in the presence of all the
congregation of Israel, and spread forth
his hands toward heaven: And he said, Lord
God of Israel, there is no God like thee,
in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who
keepest covenant and mercy with thy
servants that walk before thee with all
their heart: And now, O God of Israel, let
thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which
thou spakest unto thy servant David my
father. But will God indeed dwell on the
earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of
heavens cannot contain thee; how much less
this house that I have builded?
Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and
afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I
in heaven but thee? and there is none upon
earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh
and my heart faileth: but God is the
strength of my heart, and my portion for
ever.

467:17-23
Science reveals Spirit, Soul, as not in
the body, and God as not in man but as
reflected by man. The greater cannot be in
the lesser. The belief that the greater
can be in the lesser is an error that
works ill. This is a leading point in the
Science of Soul, that Principle is not in
its idea. Spirit, Soul, is not confined in
man, and is never in matter.
We are prone to believe either in more
than one Supreme Ruler or in some power
less than God. We imagine that Mind can be
imprisoned in a sensuous body. When the
material body has gone to ruin, when evil
has overtaxed the belief of life in matter
and destroyed it, then mortals believe
that the deathless Principle, or Soul,
escapes from matter and lives on; but this
is not true.
The educated belief that Soul is in the
body causes mortals to regard death as a
friend, as a stepping-stone out of
mortality into immortality and bliss. The
Bible calls death an enemy, and Jesus
overcame death and the grave instead of
yielding to them. He was "the way." To
him, therefore, death was not the
threshold over which he must pass into
living glory.
As astronomy reverses the human perception
of the movement of the solar system, so
Christian Science reverses the seeming
relation of Soul and body and makes body
tributary to Mind.
So long as we believe that soul can sin or
that immortal Soul is in mortal body, we
can never understand the Science of being.
When humanity does understand this
Science, it will become the law of Life to
man, even the higher law of
Soul, which prevails over material sense
through harmony and immortality.

Ps 72:18,19
Blessed be the Lord God, the God of
Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
And blessed be his glorious name for ever:
and let the whole earth be filled with his
glory; Amen, and Amen.
Then one of them, which was a lawyer,
asked him a question, tempting him, and
saying, Master, which is the great
commandment in the law? Jesus said unto
him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with
all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and
with all thy mind. This is the first and
great commandment. And the second is like
unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. On these two commandments hang
all the law and the prophets.
(17)
467:1-16 What
What are the demands of the Science of
Soul? Answer. The
first demand of this Science is, "Thou
shalt have no other gods before me." This
me is Spirit. Therefore the command
means this: Thou shalt have no
intelligence, no life, no substance, no
truth, no love, but that which is
spiritual. The second is like unto it,
"Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
It should be thoroughly understood that
all men have one Mind, one God and Father,
one Life, Truth, and Love. Mankind will
become perfect in proportion as this fact
becomes apparent, war will cease and the
true brotherhood of man will be
established. Having no other gods, turning
to no other but the one perfect Mind to
guide him, man is the likeness of God,
pure and eternal, having that Mind which
was also in Christ.
Moses declared as Jehovah's first command
of the Ten: "Thou shalt have no other gods
before me!" But behold the zeal of belief
to establish the opposite error of many
minds. The argument of the serpent in the
allegory, "Ye shall be as gods," urges
through every avenue the belief that Soul
is in body, and that infinite Spirit, and
Life, is in finite forms. Rightly
understood, instead of possessing a
sentient material form, man has a
sensationless body; and God, the Soul of
man and of all existence, being perpetual
in His own individuality, harmony, and
immortality, imparts and perpetuates these
qualities in man, through
Mind, not matter.
Dost thou "love the Lord thy God with all
thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
all thy mind"? This command includes much,
even the surrender of all merely material
sensation, affection, and worship. This is
the El Dorado of Christianity. It involves
the Science of Life, and recognizes only
the divine control of Spirit, in which
Soul is our master, and material sense and
human will have no place.

Luke 20:34-38
And Jesus answering said unto them, The
children of this world marry, and are
given in marriage: But they which shall be
accounted worthy to obtain that world, and
the resurrection from the dead, neither
marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither
can they die any more: for they are equal
unto the angels; and are the children of
God, being the children of the
resurrection. Now that the dead are
raised, even Moses shewed at the bush,
when he calleth the Lord the God of
Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God
of Jacob. For he is not a God of the dead,
but of the living: for all live unto him.
For, behold, I create new heavens and a
new earth: and the former shall not be
remembered, nor come into mind. But be ye
glad and rejoice for ever in that which I
create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a
rejoicing, and her people a joy.
For as the new heavens and the new earth,
which I will make, shall remain before me,
saith the Lord, so shall your seed and
your name remain.
(20) 60:29
Soul has infinite resources with which to
bless mankind, and happiness would be more
readily attained and would be more secure
in our keeping, if sought in Soul. Higher
enjoyments alone can satisfy the cravings
of immortal man. We cannot circumscribe
happiness within the limits of personal
sense. The senses confer no real
enjoyment.
HEAVEN. Harmony; the reign of Spirit;
government by divine Principle;
spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of
Soul.
One moment of divine consciousness, or the
spiritual understanding of Life and Love,
is a foretaste of eternity. This exalted
view, obtained and retained when the
Science of being is understood, would
bridge over with life discerned
spiritually the interval of death, and man
would be in the full consciousness of his
immortality and eternal harmony, where
sin, sickness, and death are unknown.
Eternity is God's measurement of
Soul-filled years.
