"LIFE IS REAL, AND
DEATH IS THE ILLUSION"
Having
been through an experience this winter during the time of
the influenza epidemic, I wish to relate it as one more
proof of the power of Truth, as taught in Christian Science,
to heal even as in Jesus' time. I was taken ill with the
prevailing malady, and not being able to overcome the
condition myself, I asked for help from a practitioner. It
has been my custom to read from Science and Health or some
of our literature before going to sleep, and one night soon
after calling upon the practitioner to treat me, I was
awakened with a sense of having been close to the shadow of
death. I turned on the light and got the book, declaring
that God was my life, but I could not see to read, as the
page was a blur. I therefore wakened my wife and told her to
call the practitioner. She succeeded in getting her at once
and by the time she got back to me I was reading. The
subject of the Lesson-Sermon that week was "Life," and it
certainly meant a great deal to me at that time. Before
going to sleep again we read the Lesson, and there is one
citation I shall never forget: "I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the Lord."
My
wife tells me that to mortal sense I had every appearance of
one passing on. We are reminded of God's readiness to bless
us in Isaiah, where we read, "And it shall come to pass,
that before they call, I will answer." This experience has
given me a clearer understanding of our Leader's statement,
"Life is real, and death is the illusion" (Science and
Health, p. 428), for I was near enough to know that for
God's man there is no death. I know this because during the
time the shadow was over me I was conscious of my real
self.
It
is wonderful what is being done through the understanding of
Christian Science. Jesus' command to "heal the sick, cleanse
the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils," is surely
being fulfilled today.
